Brendan Louis Joseph McCarthy
Brendan Louis Joseph McCarthy passed peacefully away surrounded by his loving family on Oct. 12, age 66.
He leaves to mourn with fond and lasting memories: son Richard (Alicia) Taylor, grandsons Alex and Ryan; sisters Moira (Moe) Vidotto (daughters Rebecca and Clara), Suzanne McCarthy (Simon Kennedy), children Fiona, Timothy, Leo; and sisters/brothers-in-law Beverly (Randy) Heath, Judy (Clyde) Hillier and Ron May, John Humphrey; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Audrey McCarthy, parents Timothy and Joan McCarthy, parents-in-law Jim and Esther May, and sister Siobahn Humphrey.
Brendan was a veteran sports journalist, respected by the public and his peers. He got his start in Newfoundland with Q Radio but spent most of his career at The Telegram and was well known for his excellent coverage of the St. John’s Maple Leafs. He was a colour commentator, a broadcaster, a Newfoundland and Labrador hockey hall of famer, an author, winner of the James H. Ellery Award for outstanding coverage of the AHL, a fine writer and avid reader.
Most of all, Brendan was a warm and giving person who will be missed by many.
Visitation will take place at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, on Tuesday October 15, 2024 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm as well as Wednesday October 16, 2024 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm.
A service will be held in the Barrett's Memorial Chapel on Thursday October 17, 2024 at 2pm with a reception to follow in the Barrett's Reception Centre.
